Based on a series of interviews with thirteen operating entities in the Western Interconnection of the United States, this report summarizes practices, lessons learned, and priorities related to the implementation of wind and solar forecasting. The operating entities provided insights regarding cost assignment, forecasting accuracy and uses, data collection, curtailment and outages, probabilistic forecasting, distributed solar production, control room integration, and staff training, among other topics.

Value of solar methods for compensating DG rely on cost-benefit analysis to determine tariff options. This brief report analyzes different objectives behind DGPV programs, finding that various objectives require different methodological perspectives when conducting a cost-benefit analysis and ultimately creating a tariff.

Technological innovations are supporting increased DPV penetration levels. One important innovation involves the use of advanced inverter functionality to address PV grid integration challenges. In many cases these functionalities only require software and protocol updates to inverters currently in use. The report describes the use of advanced inverters to support voltage and frequency level control as DG comes on and off-line. Policy and regulatory considerations to support advanced inverter deployment are also presented in the paper.

This paper summarizes existing research on the relationship between energy efficiency and demand response. Energy efficiency measures and rate design can impact investments towards demand response measures (and vice versa). Using information gathered through interviews with program administrators, customers, and service providers, this paper suggests four ways to coordinate energy efficiency and demand response programs (combining program offerings, coordinating program marketing and education, enabling market-driven coordinated services, and developing building codes and appliance standards) and also discusses barriers and opportunities to facilitate coordination.

While the Collaborative primarily works with utilities and other stakeholders in the United States, its website hosts a collection of presentations, webinars, and reports that provide more broadly applicable information and case studies on interconnection practices.
