Thailand

USAID and NREL work with power sector stakeholders in Thailand to advance clean energy technologies such as distributed PV, battery energy storage systems, and electric vehicles through targeted technical assistance and capacity building.

Battery Energy Storage Systems

USAID and NREL are supporting policymakers realize the potential values and applications of battery energy storage systems (BESS) for increasing power system flexibility. This partnership with the Thailand Office of Energy Regulatory Commission (OERC) will focus on developing best practices for deploying storage and fostering a positive regulatory and technical environment for investment in BESS. The partnership has accomplished some early successes: NREL recently published a report titled “Key Considerations for Adoption of Technical Codes and Standards for Battery Energy Storage Systems in Thailand.” Additionally, NREL participated virtually in a series of USAID Clean Power Asia’s stakeholder workshops in which public and private organizations provided input to help develop global best practices to aid in the development of Thailand’s BESS technical standards.

Electric Vehicle Deployment Support

As many Southeast Asian nations set goals to scale-up electric vehicles (EV), NREL is supporting USAID in providing technical assistance to help overcome the many challenges to large-scale EV deployment. USAID and NREL will work with the Thailand Department of Alternative Energy Development (DEDE) and the Thailand OERC. These partnerships seek to improve planning & operational practices; provide technical assistance with tariff setting; increase understanding of the selection of charging infrastructure for specific fleets; enable an environment for private sector engagement; and increase access to and the appropriate use of tools and data for evidence-based decision-making.

 Analysis of Distributed PV Adoption

NREL and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory worked with USAID's Clean Power Asia program and Chulalongkorn University’s Energy Research Institute to analyze the short-term revenue and rate impacts of distributed PV adoption for Thai distribution utilities to inform the rollout of a nationwide distributed PV policy and pilot program. The report can be found here. A webinar on the analysis can be found here.
